Sciatica

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a type of back pain that occurs when your sciatic nerve is irritated. Your sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your lower back down through your hips and buttocks, and then down your legs and into your feet. If the pressure is placed on any portion of that nerve, you will feel sciatic pain and sensory symptoms usually on one side of the leg.

What are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

The most common symptom is a pain from your lower back down through your hip and buttock and then down to the back of your leg and to the feet. The pain can be mild or severe along the path of the sciatic nerve. Additional symptoms felt in your legs and feet include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness

If you notice these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Dr. Lee for treatment.

What causes sciatica?

One of the most common causes is a herniated disc in your lower spine. Each of your vertebrae is cushioned by a flexible, flat disc made of connective tissue. Over time those discs can wear down, or become damaged through injury.

That can cause the softer tissue in the center of the disc to bulge out. Because your disc is now expanding outside of its normal position, it can place pressure on your sciatic nerve, leading to pain and sensory symptoms.

Am I at risk of sciatica?

Anyone can develop sciatica, but there are certain risk factors that elevate your chances of the condition. These include:

  • Age between 30-50
  • Excess weight
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Occupation involving prolonged sitting or heavy lifting

You could also develop sciatica if you’re involved in an accident that places excess pressure or stress on your spine

How A-IMS® treat sciatica pain?

Sciatica is treated by treating muscles along the path of the sciatic nerve. However, the major muscles treated are gluteus maximus, gluteus minimus, piriformis and tensor fascia latae. Other muscles treated include hamstring muscles, calf muscles, tibialis anterior and quadriceps muscles depending on the symptom. These muscles are stimulated with a needle to obtain local twitch responses LTRs (see Fast Relief – LTR Section for the explanation in this website) that will bring predictable fast relief to sciatic pain and sensory symptoms. If you’re ready to try a new approach to treating sciatica, schedule an appointment with Dr. Lee at your earliest convenience.

“I am a veterinarian. I lead a very active life. I woke up one day with pain that radiated from my buttocks or the lower buttocks down primarily my right leg through the hamstring muscles, the back of my right leg and the side, down the lateral side of the tibia down to the ankle. My lumbar spine MRI showed a large disc herniation at L4-5 with 3 bulging discs. After receiving the A-IMS treatment, I’ve been pain free now for over several years. I am not limited in any way, I have not missed any work and I feel fine and I don’t have even the slightest bit of a twinge.” Anybody that would have this type of pain in the back or the neck, I would certainly recommend that they talk to Dr. Lee, be evaluated by Dr. Lee before they enable anybody to do anything more radical.”

I hate going to the doctor. But Dr. Anna Lee proved to be a (very rare) exception. I’ve suffered from two herniated discs in my lower back for sixteen years, and a recent episode left me in unimaginable pain (the saddest, reddest face on the pain scale chart). On a good day, it took two hours to get out of bed and start my day, and on a bad day, I never made it out of bed at all. The usual prednisone and anti-inflammatory treatment proved ineffective, and other conservative management techniques disappointed me.

However, Dr. Lee helped me manage my severe sciatic pain through her innovative treatment, allowing me to gradually adjust to a normal life. Thanks to Dr. Lee, I can now sleep through the night, and I have resumed regular physical activity. On top of that, Dr. Lee is warm and friendly, always attentive to the variations in my pain and subtleties in my recovery process. I cannot recommend Dr. Lee highly enough!
